Abstract:In their recent report inNature, Ritter and co-workers took advantage of a persistent sulfur-based radical cation to regioselectively install a thianthrene motif in simple or complex (hetero)arenes, and the resulting thianthrenium salts could undergo divergent late-stage transformations, offering chemists a powerful platform for introducing versatile functional groups and substituents in (hetero)arene rings.
